In the February update, Blackboard has improved the workflows for Assignments and Tests and further enhanced the AI Design Assistant. Additionally, there are new options for managing and creating content and some improved accuracy when uploading grades and feedback.

Assignments, Tests, Marking and Grades

Conversion of existing assignments to new assignment workflow

The Create Test and Create Assignment workflows used to share the same content settings, but the workflows have been separated since last August. This month’s update will run an automatic bulk conversion of any assignments created before August 2024 to ensure that all assignments past and present will benefit from this new workflow. See the August 2024 Blog for details on the workflow differences.

Assignments following the conversion: There will be no option to add questions to assignments and attempts will only be created with students interact with the assignment, such as submitting a file or adding content. Clicking on the assignment will not create an attempt.

Tests following the conversion: Tests with questions will remain the same. Any tests without questions will be set to Hidden from students. When you copy tests over from previous modules, they will also be set to Hidden from students. Some assignment-specific options have been removed from the test settings menu:

Collect submissions offline
Use grading rubric
Maximum points
2 grades per student
Peer review

Additionally, the functionality for student visibility options and release conditions for tests have been updated. Now, instructors must add one or more questions to their test to make it visible to students or to add release conditions. This ensures that students only see assessments that they can actively engage with.

Masking access codes for Tests

In the past, when an exam invigilator entered an access code for an online exam using Blackboard Tests, the code was visible on the screen when entered. This compromised the security of the testing environment. Now, the code is masked (******) to ensure enhanced security. An option to view the code is available but the default state keeps it hidden which provides better privacy and protection during exams.

Improved accuracy when uploading grades and feedback

Instructors can now upload grades and feedback for assignments, journals, and discussions with improved accuracy. Previously, uploaded grades were always stored at the override level, which left any underlying attempts or submissions ungraded. This caused the Needs Grading and New Submission flags to remain visible, even when grading had been completed offline. Uploaded grades and feedback are now correctly mapped to the corresponding attempt or submission which reduces confusion and provides better clarity for instructors. AI Design Assistant

Managing and Creating Content

New image block on Document creator

Blackboard have added a new image block to Documents. Image blocks are used to upload your own images, use the AI Design Assistant to generate images, or select images from Unsplash. Image blocks can be moved throughout a Document, just like other block types. You have the option to resize images, set height, and maintain aspect ratios in image blocks.

A dedicated image block makes adding images more apparent. Adding images via the image block also reduces white space around images and provides greater control over content design. For more information on using Documents in Blackboard see Enhancements to Documents.

Changing Folders to Learning Modules

Instructors can now change a folder to a learning module or a learning module to a folder. Benefits of changing a folder to a learning module include:

Thumbnail images: Learning modules come with thumbnail images, which provide a visually appealing course experience.
Forced sequencing: Instructors can force students to navigate learning modules in linear paths.
Progress bar: Learning modules have a progress bar for students that highlights the number of items that they need to complete and their progression on those items.
Previous and next navigation: Students can quickly navigate to the next or previous item in a learning module.

It is also possible to convert a learning module to a folder, though we would not recommend this, as it will remove the added benefits of using learning modules as listed above.

Idea Exchange

This section aims to keep you updated on progress of enhancements requested on the Blackboard Anthology Idea Exchange. The following three items have changed their status to ‘Planning to implement’:

Yn y diweddariad ym mis Ionawr, mae Blackboard wedi gwella’r Cynorthwyydd Dylunio DA trwy ychwanegu mwy o ieithoedd a gwella’r nodweddion Awto-gynhyrchu. Yn ogystal, mae nodweddion newydd ar gyfer Creu Dogfennau ac Amodau Rhyddhau.

Cynnyrch Cynorthwyydd Dylunio DA

Mae Blackboard wedi gwella’r nodweddion awto-gynhyrchu yn y Cynorthwyydd Dylunio DA i gael allbwn cyflymach a mwy cymhlyg. What’s new in Blackboard – January 2025

In the January update, Blackboard has improved the AI Design Assistant by adding more languages and enhancing the Auto-generation features. Additionally, there are new features for Creating Documents and Release Conditions.

AI Design Assistant Outputs

Blackboard have improved the auto-generation features within the AI Design Assistant to have faster and more complex outputs. When auto-generating Learning Modules for example, all you need is a few sentences to describe the Modules, and the AI Design Assistant creates longer descriptions and deeper focus on the topic:

As well as learning modules, they include improvements for auto-generating: Assignments, Discussions, Journals, Test questions and AI Conversation avatars. See our webpages for further information on the AI Design Assistant and training sessions are also available to book here.

More languages in AI Design Assistant

The AI Design Assistant now includes expanded language outputs. AI workflows now work in Greek, Catalan, Croatian, Irish, and Slovenian. For a complete list of languages available for AI outputs, see Blackboard’s AI Design Assistant for Instructors page. See below for how to change the language:

Direct grade entry from the Grid view

Instructors can now enter assignment grades directly in the Grid view (selected by choosing the Marks tab in the Gradebook) with improved accuracy and consistency.

Previously, grades entered in these views were stored at the override level, which caused confusion as underlying attempts remained ungraded and continued to display the Needs Grading and New Submission flags. This latest update ensures that grades entered this way are properly mapped to the underlying attempt or submission when applicable.

NOTE: This feature is only applicable in the Marks view, grades continue to be shown as override if you are in the Markable Items view. Also, grades entered via file upload continue to be stored as override grades.

Content blocks for designing Documents

Blackboard have improved the content designer when creating documents which makes it much easier to use. When instructors create or edit a document, the content block no longer closes when you collapse the menu in the editor. Also, the editor no longer closes when editing table setting

File uploads for Documents

This latest update has updated the default file option when instructors upload files to documents. The default file option is now View and Download file. Also, it is now possible to use the Undo and Redo functions for file uploads. This is very useful if you’ve uploaded an incorrect file to your document, you can just click the ‘undo’ feature.

Submission attempts for Release Conditions

You can now use item submission status for a release condition. For example, an instructor who wants students to access a document only after submitting a quiz would use a release condition. Students can access content items without needing to wait for a grade to be posted.

Merging Courses 2024-25

Now that the 2024-25 modules are available to teaching staff, we can link them together at the module co-ordinator’s request. This process is called merging courses (previously known as parent-childing) and works with courses in Blackboard Ultra. Linking courses together is an effective way of dealing with separate courses with the same content so you don’t have to upload materials to two or more different courses.

This process makes one course the Primary (previously parent), whilst the other course(s) becomes Secondary (previously child). There’s no limit on how many secondary courses you can make but there can only be one primary.

If you’d like to merge any courses, we invite module coordinators to contact elearning@aber.ac.uk
indicating the module codes for the primary and every secondary course.

Examples from Aberystwyth

Many members of staff are currently using the merge course facility across the institution. Some examples are:

Modules are taught the same content but there’s a module available for different years.
Modules that bring together different degree schemes and have different module IDs, e.g. dissertation modules.

Essentially, any module/course that shares the same content is ideal for Merging courses.

What do students see?

Students will see the name of the course that they are enrolled on (even if it’s the secondary course) when they log into Blackboard but they will see all the content placed in the primary course. Instructors will not be able to place content in the secondary course.

Things to consider

Now, before the start of term and whilst course content is being built, is the perfect time for linking your courses. Whilst the linking of courses does save time in the loading of materials, here are some points to consider:

All content can be viewed as soon as the courses are merged (as long as students are enrolled on the course). In addition to PowerPoints and lecture materials, this also includes Announcements and other interactive tools on your primary course.
Historical student interactions on a secondary course (such as using blogs or posting in discussion boards) won’t be available once the courses have been merged.
Any submission points created on a secondary module before the merge takes place will no longer be able to be viewed. We would advise creating these again in the primary course.

How do I control content so that it is only viewable to a module cohort?

Whilst all content is automatically visible once the courses are merged, you can use groups and adaptive release if you only want the content to be visible to a specific module cohort. This might be useful, for example, if you have merged a 2^nd year and 3^rd year course but your students on the different courses have separate assignments. You can use groups – 1 for the 2^nd year students and one for 3^rd year students and limit who can see the assignment information and submission point. Merging Courses and the Grade Book

Once the merging takes place, all students will appear in the Grade Book of the primary course. You can, however, determine whether they are enrolled on the parent course as this information displays against the student in the Grade Book columns.

Yn ôl y drefn hon, bydd un cwrs yn gwrs cynradd (gelwid gynt yn rhiant), a’r cwrs neu gyrsiau eraill yn gwrs eilaidd (gelwid gynt yn blentyn). Ni chyfyngir ar nifer y gyrsiau eilaidd ond ni ellir cael mwy nag un cwrs cynradd.

Os ydych chi’n gydlynydd modiwl a hoffech i ni gysylltu eich cyrsiau yn ôl y drefn hon, cysylltwch ag eddysgu@aber.ac.uk gan nodi’r codau modiwl ar gyfer y cwrs cynradd a phob cwrs eilaidd yr hoffech ei gyfuno.

Enghreifftiau o Aberystwyth

Mae llawer o aelodau staff eisoes wedi cyfuno cyrsiau ar draws y sefydliad. Dyma ambell engraifft:

Dysgir yr un cynnwys ar y modiwlau ond mae modiwl ar gael i flynyddoedd gwahanol.
Modiwlau sy’n dod â gwahanol gynlluniau gradd at ei gilydd a chanddynt wahanol gyfeirnodau modiwl, er enghraifft modiwlau traethodau estynedig.

Yn y bôn, mae pob cwrs sy’n rhannu’r un cynnwys yn ddelfrydol ar gyfer eu cyfuno.

Beth mae’r myfyrwyr yn ei weld?

Wrth fewngofnodi i Blackboard, bydd y myfyrwyr yn gweld enw’r cwrs y maent wedi’i cofrestru arno (hyd yn oed os mai’r cwrs eilaidd yw hwnnw) ond byddant yn gweld yr holl gynnwys a osodir yn y cwrs cynradd. Ni ddylid gosod na chreu unrhyw gynnwys yn y cwrs eilaidd.

Pwyntiau i’w hystyried…

Nawr, cyn dechrau’r tymor ac wrth i chi greu cynnwys eich cyrsiau, yw’r amser perffaith i gysylltu cyrsiau. Er bod cysylltu cyrsiau yn arbed amser wrth lwytho deunyddiau, ystyriwch yr isod cyn gwneud cais:

Gellir gweld yr holl gynnwys cyn gynted ag y bydd y cyrsiau’n cael eu cyfuno (cyn belled â bod y myfyrwyr wedi’u cofrestru ar y cwrs). Gellir gweld sleidiau PowerPoint, deunyddiau darlithoedd, a chwynnwys fel Cyhoeddiadau a deunyddiau rhyngweithiol eraill ar eich cwrs cynradd.
Ni fydd rhyngweithiadau myfyrwyr hanesyddol ar fodiwl eilaidd (megis defnyddio blog neu bostio mewn byrddau trafod) ar gael ar ôl i’r cyrsiau gael eu cyfuno.
Ni fydd modd gweld unrhyw fannau cyflwyno a grëwyd ar gwrs eilaidd cyn y cyfuno. Fe’ch cynghorir i’w creu o’r newydd yn y cwrs cynradd.

Sut gallaf reoli’r cynnwys i sicrhau mai myfyrwyr y modiwl yn unig fydd yn ei weld?

Er bod modd gweld yr holl gynnwys yn awtomatig ar ôl i’r cyrsiau gael eu cyfuno, gallwch ddefnyddio grwpiau ac ‘amodau rhyddhau’ (gynt ‘rhyddhau’n ymaddasol’ yn Blackboard Original) os dymunwch i’r cynnwys gael ei weld gan garfan benodol o fyfyrwyr. Gall fod yn ddefnyddiol, er enghraifft, os ydych wedi cyfuno cwrs ail a thrydedd flwyddyn ond bod gan y myfyrwyr ar y gwahanol gyrsiau aseiniadau annibynnol. Gallwch ddefnyddio grwpiau – 1 ar gyfer myfyrwyr yr ail flwyddyn ac 1 ar gyfer myfyrwyr y drydedd flwyddyn a chyfyngu ar bwy all weld y wybodaeth am yr aseiniadau a’r man cyflwyno. Dilynwch ein cyfarwyddiadau ar greu grŵp ac amodau rhyddhau.

Llyfr Graddau a Chyfuno Cyrsiau

Ar ôl cyfuno, bydd pob myfyriwr yn ymddangos yn Llyfr Graddau’r cwrs cynradd. Fodd bynnag, gallwch bennu a ydynt wedi’u cofrestru ar y cwrs eilaidd gan fod y wybodaeth yma yn ymddangos wrth enw’r myfyriwr yng ngholofnau’r Llyfr Graddau.

Creu Profion Blackboard ar gyfer Arholiadau Ar-lein.

Mae’r gosodiadau ar gyfer profion yn Blackboard Ultra wedi newid yn Blackboard Ultra ac mae’r trefniadau ar gyfer cynnal arholiad wedi’u diweddaru eleni.

Dyma’r prif newidiadau:

Gallwch greu un cȏd mynediad yn unig ar gyfer eich arholiad o flaen llaw. Caiff y cȏd hwn ei greu’n awtomatig ar ffurf cȏd rhifiadol 6 digid, pan fyddwch yn dewis yr opsiwn ‘angen cȏd mynediad’ i opsiwn addass ar gyfer pob arholiad ar-lein wyneb yn wyneb.
Disgwylir i’r cydlynwyr modiwlau fynychu’r arholiad wyneb yn wyneb ar gyfer eu modiwl (am y 30 munud cyntaf). Os nad yw’n bosibl bod yn bresennol, dylid trefnu eilydd. Mae bod yn gorfforol bresennol ar gyfer yr arholiad yn galluogi cydlynwyr y Modiwl i gynhyrchu ail gȏd mynediad 30 munud ar ôl i’r arholiadau ddechrau ac i gylchredeg y cȏd hwn gyda’r tîm arholiadau.
Gall cydlynwyr modiwlau gysylltu â’r swyddfa arholiadau trwy eosstaff@aber.ac.uk cyn diwrnod yr arholiad i ddarganfod pa staff goruchwylio fydd yn bresennol yn ystod eu harholiad i gadw cofnod o’u henwau a’u henwau defnyddiwr.

Rydym wedi paratoi canllawaiau newydd sy’n esbonio’r newidiadau’n llawn: Profion Blackboard ar gyfer Arholiadau Wyneb yn Wyneb. Byddai’n werth clustnodi amser peneodol i ddarllen ac ymgyfarwyddo gyda’r canllawiau wrth i chi barartoi’ch prawf. Gweler isod y gosodiadau prawf yn Blackboard ar gyfer creu cȏd mynediad i’ch arholiad ar-lein:

Yn sgȋl y newidiadau hyn, mae’r tȋm E-ddysgu yn cynnal sesiynau hyfforddi newydd ar ‘Baratoi am Arholiadau Ar-lein’, ar 5 a 11 Rhagfyr. Gellir archebu lle ar Sesiynau Hyfforddiant DPP.

Creating Blackboard Tests for Online Exams in Ultra

Test settings have changed in Blackboard Ultra and the arrangements for conducting an exam have also been updated this year.

These are the main changes:

Only one random access code may be generated prior to the test. This code is automatically generated in the form of a 6-digit numerical code when you check the ‘Access code required’ option, which will be the case for ALL online in-person Exams using BB tests.
Module coordinators will attend the face-to-face examination for their module (for the first 30 minutes). If it is not possible to attend, arrange a substitute. Being physically present for the examination enables the Module coordinators to generate a second access code 30 minutes after the exams starts and to circulate this code with the exam team.
Module coordinators can liaise with the exams office via eosstaff@aber.ac.uk prior to exam day to discover which invigilating staff will be in attendance during their exam and collate their names and usernames.

We have prepared new guidance which explains these changes fully: Blackboard Tests for In-person Exams Guide. It’s an idea to set aside enough time to prepare the test and read the new guidance.

Due to these changes, the E-learning team will be offering additional training sessions on ‘Preparing for Online Exams’ on 5 and 11 December. Register for the training on: CPD Staff Training.

There is also an updated FAQ on Blackboard with more information on creating Blackboard tests for online exams. If you require further assistance with your test, the E-learning team are available on Teams Sessions. Contact to elearning@aber.ac.uk to arrange a session.

The E-learning team will be available to check yout test settings before the exam period between 4-20 December 2023. Remember, we are unable to check your test settings without a confirmed date or time.

We’ve created The Ultra Essentials Playlist to help staff to familiarise themselves with the exciting new features in Ultra. The playlist is comprised of 15 short videos (2-8 minutes) with a longer first introductory video Introduction to Blackboard Learn Ultra.
