In 2024, our Student Digital Champions conducted interviews with eight Aberystwyth University graduates to understand what skills they now use after graduating and skills that they wished they had learnt and developed while at university. Below are the top five skills across all the profiles that the graduates now use and how you can develop these skills: 

  1. Microsoft Excel 
  1. Microsoft Teams/Online Meeting Platforms 
  1. Photoshop and Editing Software 
  1. Outlook 
  1. Microsoft PowerPoint

DigiTip 53: Using Morph in PowerPoint 🧑🏻‍💻

Do you want to make your PowerPoints more Dynamic? DigiTip 53 Will help you to do that by using a transition in PowerPoint called Morph which can give more flow to a PowerPoint by giving smooth transitions to shapes and text changing in the slides. 

  • First Open up PowerPoint 
  • Then create two slides, one with normal text and in the following slide split up the letters of the word across the slide. I did this by using multiple text boxes. 
  • On the second slide go to the transitions tab and choose morph 
  • Then still on the transitions tab go to effect options and choose characters 
  • From there press F5 or go to the slide show tab and click on from beginning where you should now by pressing space see the morph transition take place.

DigiTip 46: Match colours on your PowerPoint slides with the Eyedropper tool 🎨

When creating a PowerPoint presentation, there may be occasions when you want to match the colour of the background or an object to a very specific shade. While the colour options available are extensive, there’s an incredibly useful tool called the eyedropper, which allows you to match a colour perfectly! 

Follow the video below to learn how to use this feature. In the video, we’ll show you how to change the colour of a shape, but the same steps apply to changing the colour of your background, a border, and much more.

DigiTip 9 – Record your screen directly in PowerPoint 🎥

If you need to include a screen-recording in your PowerPoint presentation, you can do this directly in PowerPoint without having to use any other software! Open PowerPoint and then watch the video below or follow these instructions: 

  • Select Record 
  • Select Screen Recording 
  • Open the page that you want to record 
  • Click on Select Area and choose the exact part of the screen that you want to record 
  • Select Audio if you want to record audio with your video 
  • Select Record (you should see a countdown before your recording starts) and complete your recording 
  • Once you’ve finished your recording, hover your mouse over the top of the screen and select Stop 
  • Your screen-recording will be automatically pasted into your PowerPoint presentation 
  • You can edit your recording by clicking on your recording and selecting Playback

Like Microsoft Word, PowerPoint is another Microsoft application you’ve probably used before. Planning for delivering a presentation can be daunting and even a frightening task for some, as not only do you have to speak in front of your fellow students, but your PowerPoint presentation will also be on full display. But, have no fear as this blogpost will give you some valuable tips and tricks to help turn a good presentation into a GREAT presentation!

Tip 1: Inserting Excel data into PowerPoint

If your presentation requires you to show data from an existing Microsoft Excel document, there is an easy way to display it within PowerPoint.

  1. On the slide you want your data to appear on, go to Insert > Object
  2. From the Insert Object window, select Create from file > Browse > then select the Microsoft Excel file where the chart you want to include is located > OK
  3. This will automatically insert both the data and chart from your Microsoft Excel document
  4. You can edit this data directly within your PowerPoint document by double-clicking on the chart on your slide
  5. Click outside of the chart when you are finished, and PowerPoint will produce a chart with your Excel data!
