Updates from the Physical Sciences Library

Tucked away on the fourth floor, behind the imposing red façade of the Physical Sciences Building, is the not-so-secret second library at Aberystwyth University. While it’s mainly visited by Maths, Physics and Computer Science students working nearby as a convenient (and scenic) study spot, hopefully some of the changes you’ll see here might inspire a visit to this charming library.

Recently efforts have been made by Subject Librarians Anita Saycell and Sarah Gwenlan to enhance the library with new displays and collections.

Physical Sciences Library

While the Library houses Maths, Physics and Computer Science collections and research materials, please don’t let that convince you that you shouldn’t settle in there with a good fiction book. The new fiction collection located in the Physical Sciences Library is on the right when entering the room, and contains books ranging from Frank Herbert’s Dune to Andy Weir’s Project Hail Mary.

Next to this is another new display – one that represents the (frankly sprawling) periodicals collection of Library Services. These periodicals are already available online through Primo and on the shelves of the Physical Sciences Library, and on levels E and F of the Hugh Owen Library. This display is simply showing them off alongside their covers and an easy-to-use QR code for easy access.

The Library is a great little spot both for working and just as a place to be, thanks to the work of its Subject Librarians! We hope you can come give it a visit, and maybe pick up a book along the way.
If you’re planning a visit, here’s the accessibility information for the library, and a short video showing the route from the Physical Sciences Building entrance and a view of the room itself.

Subject LibGuides

The Subject LibGuides have been updated to ensure that all the links are working and all the books listed are their most recent edition, meaning they are better than ever! Each LibGuide has been tailored to a specific subject, meaning that the information is specialised to what you are looking for. This is where you can be directed to and book a meeting with your subject librarian, find out about which books you should read, referencing help, and much more! If you are struggling with referencing, assignments, or your dissertation, this is the place to go. The LibGuides are very easy to use, with clear signposting and information layout.

We wish you an enjoyable Christmas break!

This term has been busy and has passed really quickly! It’s been a great mix with online as well as face to face teaching sessions and providing support. We’ve loved being back on the Hugh Owen Level F enquiry desk, helping with many varied questions and queries.

We are here until the Thursday 22nd December, if you need any help contact us at librarians@aber.ac.uk After the break we’ll be back on the Tuesday 3rd January.

The Iris de Freitas Room is open 24/7 from 22 December – 3 January 2023

Are you staying on Campus or in Aber during the Winter vacation?

We would like to wish everyone a lovely break and look forward to helping and supporting you in 2023!

Pastures new for Connie

We are very sad to have said goodbye to a valued member of the Academic Engagement Team, Connie Davage. Connie joined our team back in 2018 and brought her wealth of experience from the Library Service Desk Team to combine this role with supporting the team wherever needed. Connie also supported the Lifelong Learning Department and will be greatly missed by all the staff in the Department.

Many colleagues across the University have been helped by Connie over the years, from Aspire Reading List support, to digitisation requests to valuable library support.

We would like to wish Connie all the best in her new librarian role at the University of Wales, Trinity Saint David and thank her for being a fantastic colleague, star baker and friend to everyone in the team.
