The Uni has many different sports and societies that have been created to share the passion of that activity between like-minded people in Aber’s Students Union. As part of a club or society in Aber you will take part in the Raising and Giving month (RAG). This is where all of Team/ Tîm Aber comes together to come up with fun events to raise money for charity. This can include charity bake-offs, fun-runs, showcases, naked calenders and much more! This opens up a range of opportunities for you to get involved with even more events whilst raising money for some worthwhile causes!
Aberystwyth University Netball Club do a Netball 7’s charity event every year near Christmas that allows teams of males and females to take part in a fun Netball tournament for all abilities. You can come in fancy dress and make up your own name, that can be punny, silly, Christmas themed or all of the above! One of the best names this year was ‘Jingle Shells’, who happened to win the tournament too! This year the charities Netball supported were The Teenage Cancer Trust and Man-Up, a charity designed to support mental health in men and challenge the stereotypes and expectations that go with it.
My team, ‘The Mighty Morphin’ Flower Rangers’ arrived at the Sports Cage dressed in a Christmas mash-up of Santa hats, tinsel, elf socks and glitter. It was an interesting mix of Theatre, Geography, Biology and more degree Students who had no experience or had played for years. We were greeted by the buzz of loads of other teams who had put loads of effort into their costumes, the best team being SWALEG that had dressed as a Christmas Dinner! The atmosphere was friendly but still competitive on and off court, with Christmas tunes blasting out the speakers to keep us all in the festive spirit.
Unfortunately, I injured myself in the final games of our division, but my team carried on and managed to win the spoon! I was very proud of them and it was great to see the energy carried on into the night when the winners were announced for the main competition and also the Players of the Tournament, Best Dressed, and Idiots of the Tournament (I was lucky enough to be one of these).
At Aber, you can get involved with loads of activities like this and more, whilst raising money for worthwhile causes. We are committed to supporting you studies whilst providing you with oppertunities that create lifelong memories with friends and can help our community or charity organisations further afield.
