Thanks to the tremendous efforts of everyone involved, we have completed the respacing work that we needed to do in Hugh Owen Library prior to the stock from Thomas Parry arriving on week beginning 13th August.
The spaces are ready in all the right places, and hopefully the Thomas Parry materials will slot perfectly into the appropriate space in the sequence.
Thomas Parry Library will therefore close on Friday 10th August for the final time. For more details about how the transfer will work, take a look at our webpage: https://www.aber.ac.uk/en/is/news/tplsummer18/
The Llanbadarn campus will be closing down for teaching over summer 2018. There will still be some University staff and services based over there from September 2018 onwards but the Thomas Parry Library will be closing as a service library in August 2018. Alan Clark (former Librarian at the Thomas Parry Library), Bill Hines (former Assistant Director of Information Services, now retired but now an Honorary staff member in the library working on our rare and special collections) and Elizabeth Kensler (currently working in the University libraries) have organised a small get together at Thomas Parry Library in the summer, before it closes, for staff who used to work there. Many former and current colleagues are keen to get together to mark the closing of this library as a service, as this library has been special to so many of us over the years.
• This won’t be a large, formal, fancy event but a convivial event with some food and drinks along with some speeches from a few people.
• As well as current and former library staff who used to be based there, we are looking forward to seeing former staff from the College of Librarianship Wales staff as well as current Information Management, Libraries & Archives department staff along with people who have been an important part of this library’s history.
• All ideas on appropriate ways to mark the closing of this library as a service appreciated. If you have photos of the library and colleagues working there that we can share, we would be grateful if you can share them with Elizabeth Kensler firstname.lastname@example.org
This event will be held at the Thomas Parry Library on Thursday 19 July 2018 at 6pm. We will be taking photos during the event and will hope to circulate these on this blog post after the event so that those colleagues unable to attend can share in these memories.
We are progressing well with the collections resequencing and we’ll update you soon with plans of the new layout, but this post is about the additional user spaces we’ll be creating to help accommodate the needs of our students joining us once Thomas Parry Library closes.
We’ve now identified an additional two group study rooms with each able to accommodate up to 8 people. These rooms are located on the main Level E floor and in the EL6 Computer room.
In addition to these we are adding:
• 10 PC spaces on Level F, split between the main floor and the Tom Lloyd Suite
• 16 PC spaces in the Iris De Freitas room
• 4 PC spaces on the main floor of Level E
• 2 height adjustable desks in Iris De Freitas and the main floor of Level E
• 36 study spaces to the main floor of Level E
• 44 study spaces to the Iris De Freitas room
We are also investigating the possibility of increasing the number of daily use carrels available.
We have some flexibility in these plans should it be required, so we’ll be monitoring usage and capacity levels as usual. Of course all these spaces are available 24 hours per day, 7 days per week during term time, and extended opening times in vacation times near to exam periods.
To prepare for the move of Thomas Parry materials to Hugh Owen we are about to begin resequencing the current stock on the shelves on Level F. We’ve got the space to accommodate everything, we just need to make sure that the spaces are all in the right place! We also want to make sure that the stock runs in a much clearer sequence. We have our trolleys ready to go to begin on 1st June:
What this does mean is that there will be a level of noise and disruption on Level F and we apologise in advance for this. We will also need to use tables as stock holding areas so would ask you to use computers and study spaces on Levels D & E. Access to stock on Level F may be restricted if it is in the process of being moved or may be in a new location, so please ask for assistance at the desk on Level F.
We’ve set up a page to answer your questions about the move from Thomas Parry Library https://www.aber.ac.uk/en/is/news/tplsummer18/ but if you have any further questions or feedback then please do let us know at email@example.com
To tie in with the move of Departments to Penglais in the summer, we will be closing Thomas Parry Library on Friday 10th August 2018 and beginning the transfer of books and journals to Hugh Owen Library on Monday 13th August 2018. We’re hoping to have these items out of circulation for as short a period as possible however, if there is something you can’t find during the Summer period, let us know either via the Enquiry Desk or email firstname.lastname@example.org
We’ve started this blog to keep you up to date with any developments on this move, along with giving you an opportunity to be amongst the first to see how we plan to accommodate all this extra material at Hugh Owen. In the meantime, you may start to notice some initial moves in the Library to prepare for this influx. We’ve already rearranged the layout on Level E, creating some more study spaces by taking down some shelves that were no longer needed, and we will keep you up to date with any further changes, but as always, you can ask our staff if there’s something you can’t find or that isn’t where you think it should be.
