It began in America but has been marked every October in the UK since 1987. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For Black History Month, <strong>Aberystwyth University Library<\/strong> has published a new list of recommended reading and resources which offer the opportunity to explore some perhaps lesser-known facets of Black History:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/rl.talis.com\/3\/aber\/lists\/E17E6196-0C9D-40D6-732B-E79B19A2701F.html?lang=en&amp;login=1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>Visit the Black History Month Reading List<\/strong><\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong> Welsh Black History<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Our Black History in Wales selections take us on journeys to explore Wales\u2019 involvement in slavery and its pivotal role in abolishing it (<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/primo.aber.ac.uk\/permalink\/44WHELF_ABW\/eeo2ri\/alma9912138185402418\" target=\"_blank\">Slave Wales by Chris Evans<\/a>); &nbsp;personal journeys of self-discovery and&nbsp;mixed-race identity (<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/primo.aber.ac.uk\/permalink\/44WHELF_ABW\/eeo2ri\/alma994558883402418\" target=\"_blank\">Sugar and&nbsp;Slate&nbsp;by&nbsp;Charlotte Williams<\/a>) and&nbsp;onto the first Welsh-language volume to discuss the portrayal of multiculturalism in Wales in contemporary Welsh and English fiction&nbsp;(<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/primo.aber.ac.uk\/permalink\/44WHELF_ABW\/eeo2ri\/alma9912356711702418\" target=\"_blank\">Y&nbsp;Gymru&nbsp;Ddu&nbsp;ar&nbsp;Ddalen&nbsp;Wen&nbsp;by Lisa Sheppard<\/a>).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong> British Black History <\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>In this section, we look at the&nbsp;experiences of women and students of colour in&nbsp;British Academia&nbsp;(<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/primo.aber.ac.uk\/permalink\/44WHELF_ABW\/eeo2ri\/alma9912367220202418\" target=\"_blank\">Inside the ivory tower edited by Deborah Gabriel and Shirley Tate<\/a> and <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/rl.talis.com\/3\/aber\/items\/84545BD7-4D86-6731-B797-8C25F984C4D0.html?lang=cen&amp;login=1\" target=\"_blank\">Insider-Outsider: The Role of Race in Shaping the Experiences of Black and Minority Ethnic Students by Sofia Akel<\/a>).&nbsp;We see how&nbsp;the&nbsp;cultural impact of the politics of race and antiracism&nbsp;is reflected in&nbsp;Black British and British Asian literature&nbsp;(<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/primo.aber.ac.uk\/permalink\/44WHELF_ABW\/dd470m\/alma9912093685702418\" target=\"_blank\">Race and antiracism in&nbsp;Black British and British Asian literature by Dave Gunning)<\/a>, and follow both a historical narrative of Britain&#8217;s racialized minorities (<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/primo.aber.ac.uk\/permalink\/44WHELF_ABW\/dd470m\/alma9912367220002418\" target=\"_blank\">Staying Power: The History of Black People in Britain, Peter Fryer<\/a>) and a&nbsp;very British crisis of identity&nbsp;(<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/primo.aber.ac.uk\/permalink\/44WHELF_ABW\/eeo2ri\/alma9912170642602418\" target=\"_blank\">Afua&nbsp;Hirsch\u2019s&nbsp;Brit(ish): on race, identity and belonging<\/a>).&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong> Black History in Poetry&nbsp; <\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Experience Black&nbsp;History in poetry&nbsp;through&nbsp;recent works&nbsp;by the Dylan Thomas Prize winning&nbsp;Kayombo&nbsp;Chingonyi (<a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/primo.aber.ac.uk\/permalink\/44WHELF_ABW\/eeo2ri\/alma9912366912402418\" target=\"_blank\">Kumukanda<\/a>) and Raymond&nbsp;Antrobus&#8217; debut collection <a rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" href=\"https:\/\/primo.aber.ac.uk\/permalink\/44WHELF_ABW\/eeo2ri\/alma9912367020502418\" target=\"_blank\">The Perseverance<\/a>. These are the special projects we are highlighting this month:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.proquest.com\/pq1lit\/docview\/2343193971?accountid=14783\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>African Writers Series\u200b<\/strong><\/a>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left\">This online&nbsp;collection&nbsp;includes over 250 volumes of fiction, poetry, drama and non-fictional prose&nbsp;by African authors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.proquest.com\/pq1lit\/docview\/2343197153?accountid=14783\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>Caribbean Literature\u200b<\/strong><\/a>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left\">More than a million-and-a-half Africans, along with many Indians and South Asians, were brought to the Caribbean between the 15th and 19th centuries. Today, their descendants are producing literature with strong and direct ties to traditional African expressions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.proquest.com\/pq1lit\/docview\/2343197365?accountid=14783\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>Black Women Writers\u200b<\/strong><\/a>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left\">Black Women Writers\u202fpresents 100,000 pages of literature and essays on feminist issues &#8211; from 18th century narratives depicting slavery, to works by a wide range of authors during the late 1950s and 1960s, following the winds of independence that swept across Africa.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.proquest.com\/pq1lit\/docview\/2343193942?accountid=14783\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"><strong>Black Short Fiction and Folklore\u200b<\/strong><\/a>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-left\">Black Short Fiction and Folklore\u202fbrings together 82,000 pages and more than 11,000 works of short fiction, comprising a&nbsp;variety of traditions ranging from early African oral traditions to&nbsp;hip-hop&nbsp;&#8211; including&nbsp;fables, parables, ballads,&nbsp;folk-tales, short stories and novellas.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We have included a range of physical and online resources on the list, so whether you\u2019re on campus or off, you\u2019ll find something interesting to read.
