Using some basic tools and making some small changes to your documents can make a big difference to students with disabilities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Today (15<sup>th<\/sup> May) is Global Accessibility Awareness Day, so it\u2019s a good day to see what you can do to improve the accessibility of materials in Blackboard.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You can access tools in both Blackboard and Microsoft Office to help you create accessible documents:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.aber.ac.uk\/en\/is\/it-services\/elearning\/blackboard\/ally\/\">Blackboard Ally<\/a><\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.aber.ac.uk\/en\/accessibility\/guidance-staff\/#guidance-on-creating-accessible-learning-materials\">Using Office tools to create accessible materials<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>If you have 5 minutes today, look at the <a href=\"https:\/\/help.blackboard.com\/Ally\/Ally_for_LMS\/Instructor\/Course_Accessibility_Report\">Ally Course Accessibility Report<\/a> in one of your Blackboard courses. The section on content with the easiest issues to fix is a good place to start. This will guide you through some quick changes you can make straightaway.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Or you may find some things that you want to improve over the summer, as part of the annual course creation process.&nbsp; One of the biggest issues we see in Blackboard courses is non-OCR scanned documents. A good way to make sure that scanned documents are accessible is to speak to our <a href=\"https:\/\/www.aber.ac.uk\/en\/is\/library-services\/digitisation\/\">Digitisation Team<\/a> who can advise on scanning book chapters and journal articles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here at AU nearly 30% of our student population has a declared disability, so any improvements you make to the accessibility of your content will make a big impact on how students engage with them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Find out more about <a href=\"https:\/\/accessibility.day\/\">Global Accessibility Awareness Day<\/a> (this is an external site and not available in Welsh).<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Providing accessible learning materials helps everyone to learn.
