<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Vevox is Aberystwyth University’s polling tool. In addition to facilitating interactive learning and teaching, Vevox can be used to create engaging induction activities for students.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Here are some ideas on how you can incorporate Vevox into your induction activities to welcome new and returning students back to campus.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

1. Word Cloud<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

World Clouds are interactive and anonymous \u2013 so students can get involved without feeling as though they are being put on the spot. The more participants choose a word in response to the question or prompt, the bigger the word becomes on the screen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

World Clouds can be used for low-stakes ‘Get to Know Each Other’-style questions, such as where the students are from, favourite hobbies, what course they are studying, or even just to get an overall sense of how students are feeling. Nervous? Scared? Excited? Starting university can trigger all of these feelings, and more. A world cloud lets the students anonymously submit a word whilst seeing how others in their cohort are feeling, too.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

2. Pin on image<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

This feature lets participants point to specific parts of an image. An idea could be to use an image of a map and ask students to pin their hometown or home country on the map. For international students especially, this gives students the opportunity to get to know others from similar places and meet new people from across the world \u2013 as well as demonstrate the global reach of the university.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

3. Multichoice or Matching Poll<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

For new students, this can be a good way to gauge their understanding of the university’s support and services that are available to them. It also identifies gaps in knowledge and helps staff understand what is and isn’t being conveyed clearly to new students, if they are taking it all in, or if they are completely overwhelmed! A Multichoice or Matching poll lets the students choose from a set of options (making it a little easier for them).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This feature could also be used to create a quiz about Aberystwyth \u2013 Get to Know the Town! An interactive way to teach students a bit more about what Aberystwyth and the surrounding areas have to offer \u2013 popular coffee shops, where to go for walks or hikes (plenty of options), the best sunset-watching spots on the prom (PLENTY of options). Tip: Have the students work in teams to help encourage conversation<\/p>\n\n\n\n

4. Anonymous Q&A<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Vevox also has non-polling features, including an anonymous Q&A board that lets participants send in questions and ‘like’, or ‘upvote’, the questions from others that they want answered the most. This is an effective way to receive and answer questions from students who may be a little too shy to voice them aloud, and to see what topics are being brought up frequently from the students.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

You can sort the questions by likes to display the most popular questions first and make the Q&A more effective and engaging.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
