{"id":10464,"date":"2026-08-14T10:31:45","date_gmt":"2026-08-14T09:31:45","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/wordpress.aber.ac.uk\/e-learning\/?p=10464"},"modified":"2026-08-14T10:33:15","modified_gmt":"2026-08-14T09:33:15","slug":"whats-new-in-blackboard-august-2026","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/wordpress.aber.ac.uk\/e-learning\/2026\/08\/14\/whats-new-in-blackboard-august-2026\/","title":{"rendered":"What\u2019s new in Blackboard August 2026\u00a0"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the\u202fAugust update, we want to draw your attention\u202fto the following\u202fBlackboard enhancements:\u202f&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Manage group membership with drag and drop&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Create multiple groups at once&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Make notifications more accurate and reliable&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Add sorting controls for users in Discussions&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Restructured Gradebook grid view (Instructors)&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Export question banks (Instructors)&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Display answer-level feedback for selected options only (Instructors and Students)&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Navigate courses faster with an improved user interface&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Set release conditions based on journal submissions&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Manage group membership with drag and drop&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Managing groups is now quicker thanks to new drag-and-drop functionality.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Instructors<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">From the Groups management area, instructors can now:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Drag students directly from the unassigned list into a group.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Remove individual students from a group without having to clear all members.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Continue using existing assignment methods alongside drag and drop.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This makes it much easier to create and adjust groups, particularly when making small changes to membership or balancing students across several groups.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Image 1: Instructors can drag and drop students to assign them to a group.<\/em>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1379\" height=\"431\" src=\"http:\/\/wordpress.aber.ac.uk\/e-learning\/files\/2026\/08\/Picture1-1.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-10465\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Image 2: Instructors can remove individual students from a group instead of removing them all at once.<\/em>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"602\" height=\"342\" src=\"http:\/\/wordpress.aber.ac.uk\/e-learning\/files\/2026\/08\/Picture2.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-10466\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Create multiple groups at once&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Setting up groups has also become much more efficient.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Instructors<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Instead of creating groups one by one, instructors can now create multiple groups in a single action. Anywhere from two to 5,000 groups can be generated at once, making setup much faster for large modules.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">After groups are created, members can be added manually, imported, or assigned automatically.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A few things to note:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>When using <strong>Automatically assign<\/strong>, Blackboard creates the required number of groups based on your chosen group size.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>When using <strong>Self-enrol<\/strong>, three groups are created automatically. Any additional groups created through the bulk creation option are added to those existing groups.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This update significantly reduces the amount of repetitive setup required when preparing collaborative activities.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Image 1: Instructors can now create multiple groups at once instead of adding them one at a time.<\/em>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"602\" height=\"277\" notifications more accurate and reliable&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Blackboard has improved the reliability of its notification system by fixing several issues that previously caused missing, duplicated, or mistimed notifications.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Instructors and Students<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Improvements include:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Students only receive due and overdue notifications for groups they are actually assigned to.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Duplicate notifications for copied Group Discussions have been removed.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Notifications for discussions, blogs, journals, and wikis now work correctly after course content is copied.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Digest emails now include information about grade updates and cleared grades.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Failed digest emails are no longer incorrectly marked as delivered.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Announcement emails are sent only after their configured start date, ensuring students do not receive messages before content becomes available.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">These changes should reduce unnecessary notification traffic while increasing confidence that alerts reflect what is happening in a course.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Add sorting controls for users in Discussions&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Discussion areas now include sorting controls to help users navigate long conversations more easily.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Instructors and Students<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Users can now:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Sort posts by <strong>Newest first<\/strong> or <strong>Oldest first<\/strong>.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Return to discussions and find them displayed in the same order they previously selected.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Sorting applies throughout the discussion, including reply threads, and works consistently on mobile devices.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This makes it easier to follow active discussions, review contributions, and find recent activity.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Restructured Gradebook grid view&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Gradebook Grid View has been reorganised to provide a more streamlined grading experience for instructors.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/wordpress.aber.ac.uk\/e-learning\/2026\/07\/30\/update-to-blackboard-gradebook-august-2026\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">A separate Blackboard update article covers these changes in greater detail<\/a>, but the overall goal is to make grading tasks easier to manage via a clearer layout and workflow.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Export question banks&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Question banks can now be exported directly from Blackboard.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Instructors<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">From the question bank management page, instructors can export a question bank as a file and save it locally.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This allows staff to:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Create backups of assessment content.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Share question banks with colleagues.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Reuse content across multiple courses.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The export process gives instructors greater flexibility when managing and preserving assessment materials.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"602\" height=\"239\" selected options only&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Blackboard has changed how feedback is displayed for multiple-choice questions.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Instructors<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There are no changes to the way feedback is created. Staff can continue adding feedback to individual answer options using the existing workflow.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Students<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">After submitting an assessment attempt, students now only see feedback for the answer options they selected.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Previously, students could see feedback for all options. The new approach provides more focused guidance while preventing students from viewing feedback linked to answers they did not choose.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This allows feedback to remain targeted and relevant to individual responses.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Navigate courses faster with an improved user interface&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Blackboard has continued its work to improve navigation and overall user experience.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">These changes are intended to:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Make it easier to understand where you are within a course.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Reduce accidental navigation mistakes.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Improve consistency and performance.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Help students stay focused during assessments.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Importantly, course structures and content remain unchanged, so instructors do not need to redesign anything.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Full-page content navigation<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Learning modules, folders, documents, assessments, media, and other content items now open as full pages rather than in overlay panels.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Opening content in a dedicated page creates a more consistent experience and makes it easier to move back through course materials without losing your place.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Image 1: Content now opens as a full page with consistent headers and navigation, rather than as stacked overlay panels.<\/em>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1379\" height=\"718\" src=\"http:\/\/wordpress.aber.ac.uk\/e-learning\/files\/2026\/08\/Picture6.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-10470\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Breadcrumbs for contextual clarity<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Content pages now include breadcrumb navigation.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Breadcrumbs show where an item sits within a course structure and provide quick access back to parent folders and modules. They are automatically generated and require no setup from instructors.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This additional context helps users keep track of their location within a course and move around more efficiently.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Image 2: Breadcrumbs on a content page show the user&#8217;s location and allow quick movement back through modules and folders.<\/em>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1379\" height=\"234\" src=\"http:\/\/wordpress.aber.ac.uk\/e-learning\/files\/2026\/08\/Picture7.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-10471\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Clearer, intentional exit from content<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The purple \u201cX\u201d previously used to leave content has been replaced with a clearly labelled exit option in the navigation area.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Making the exit control more visible and deliberate helps reduce accidental page closures and makes navigation more predictable.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Image 3: The exit option now sits within the navigation banner, reducing accidental exits.<\/em>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"602\" height=\"177\" src=\"http:\/\/wordpress.aber.ac.uk\/e-learning\/files\/2026\/08\/Picture8.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-10472\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Focus state for tests and assignments (Students)<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When students open a test or assignment, Blackboard automatically switches to a focus state.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This view reduces visual distractions by minimising non-essential navigation elements and presenting a cleaner assessment screen.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The feature:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Helps students concentrate on assessments.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Does not affect grading or functionality.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Still allows students to navigate elsewhere if needed.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Requires no action from instructors.&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Focus state is enabled automatically and cannot be switched off.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Image 4: In focus state, nonessential navigation is minimized so students can concentrate on completing an assessment.<\/em>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1379\" height=\"731\" src=\"http:\/\/wordpress.aber.ac.uk\/e-learning\/files\/2026\/08\/Picture9.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-10473\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Set release conditions based on journal submissions&nbsp;<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Release conditions can now be linked to journal submissions.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Instructors<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">When configuring release conditions, instructors can choose journal submission status as a requirement. Once a student submits the required journal entry, the associated content becomes available automatically.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Importantly, instructors do not need to grade the journal before content is released.
