This meeting was initiated by the UNESCO-IGCP 672 project \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.unesco.org\/new\/en\/natural-sciences\/environment\/earth-sciences\/international-geoscience-programme\/igcp-projects\/geohazards\/project-672\/\">Himalayan Glaciers and risks to local communities<\/a>\u201d leader Adina Racoviteanu from Aberystwyth University, UK and was attended by Asian co-leader Smriti Basnett from IIsc India. The meeting focused on developing methods for systematic monitoring of Glacier Lake Outburst Flood (GLOF) potential in the Himalaya using remote sensing, and disseminating the methodologies developed via training workshops for local institutions<em>\u00a0<\/em>in India, Bhutan and Nepal. The objectives of the meeting were closely aligned with the <a href=\"https:\/\/cryosphericsciences.org\/\">International Association of Cryospheric Sciences\u00a0<\/a>(IACS)\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/ipa.arcticportal.org\/\">International Permafrost Association\u00a0<\/a>(IPA) working and standing groups on\u00a0<u>Debris Covered Glaciers<\/u>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/gaphaz.org\/\">Glacier and Permafrost Hazards in Mountain Regions<\/a>, both of which are open to membership and new contributions to anyone.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" data-attachment-id=\"208\" data-permalink=\"https:\/\/wordpress.aber.ac.uk\/discover-glaciers-IGCP672\/geological-society-of-london-workshop-sept-2-4th-2019\/group_photo\/\" data-orig-file=\"https:\/\/wordpress.aber.ac.uk\/discover-glaciers-IGCP672\/files\/2019\/12\/Group_photo.jpg\" data-orig-size=\"400,300\" data-comments-opened=\"1\" data-image-meta=\"{&quot;aperture&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;credit&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;camera&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;caption&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;created_timestamp&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;copyright&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;focal_length&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;iso&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;shutter_speed&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;title&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;orientation&quot;:&quot;0&quot;}\" data-image-title=\"Group_photo\" data-image-description=\"\" data-image-caption=\"\" data-large-file=\"https:\/\/wordpress.aber.ac.uk\/discover-glaciers-IGCP672\/files\/2019\/12\/Group_photo.jpg\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-208\" src=\"http:\/\/wordpress.aber.ac.uk\/discover-glaciers-IGCP672\/files\/2019\/12\/Group_photo.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"400\" height=\"300\" \/><\/p>\n<p>During the first afternoon, seven experts gave talks on the state of research on debris covered glaciers and lakes (abstracts of the talks are available <a href=\"https:\/\/drive.google.com\/open?id=1YZTyeWvYKPmWsR-gZUF2rlx8m1NrOIBN\">here<\/a>):<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.st-andrews.ac.uk\/gsd\/people\/tb203\/\">Dr Tobias Bolch<\/a> \u2013 Mapping, area change and mass balance of debris-covered glaciers from space<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsl.ch\/de\/mitarbeitende\/miles.html\">Dr Evan Miles<\/a> \u2013 Ice cliffs and supraglacial ponds: state of knowledge and research directions<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.reynolds-international.co.uk\/\">Professor John Reynolds<\/a> \u2013 An introduction to Glacial Lake Hazard Assessments<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/environment.leeds.ac.uk\/geography\/staff\/1093\/dr-duncan-quincey\">Dr Duncan Quincey<\/a> \u2013 GAPHAZ \u2013 a Scientific Standing Group on high-mountain glacier and permafrost hazards<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.northumbria.ac.uk\/about-us\/our-staff\/w\/matt-westoby\/\">Dr Matt Westoby<\/a> \u2013 GLOF modelling: state-of-the-art, opportunities, and complications<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/environment.leeds.ac.uk\/faculty\/staff\/1012\/dr-jonathan-carrivick\">Dr Jonathan Carrivick<\/a> \u2013 Impacts of glacier outburst floods within high mountain regions<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/environment.leeds.ac.uk\/see\/staff\/8939\/dr-scott-watson\">Dr Scott Watson<\/a> \u2013 Communicating earth observation data on Himalayan debris-covered glaciers and high mountain hazards<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>During the following two days, participants split into break-out sessions and addressed three main topics: 1) debris-covered glaciers; 2) glacial lake ranking schemes using remote sensing to assess hazard potential and 3) climate change and debris-covered glaciers.
