In 1998 he won an Eric Gregory Award for poetry from the Society of Authors and his work has appeared in the <em>Independent<\/em>, <em>PN Review<\/em>, <em>Poetry Wales<\/em>, <em>Leviathan <\/em>and other journals and magazines, as well as the anthology <em>New Poetries II<\/em>, edited by Michael Schmidt (Carcanet). His first collection, <em>The Canals of Mars<\/em>, appeared in 2004. Also for Carcanet, McGuinness has translated <a href=\"http:\/\/www.aber.ac.uk\/devolvedvoices\/?page_id=1501\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>For Anatole&#8217;s Tomb <\/em><\/a>by Stephane Mallarm<em>\u00e9<\/em> from the French and edited the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.carcanet.co.uk\/cgi-bin\/indexer?product=9781857548563\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">prose<\/a> and <a href=\"http:\/\/www.carcanet.co.uk\/cgi-bin\/indexer?product=9781857548426\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">poems<\/a> of the Welsh modernist poet Lynette Roberts. <em>Jilted City<\/em>, his second collection, was published by Carcanet in 2010. His novel, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.serenbooks.com\/book\/the-last-100-days\/9781854115416\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>The Last Hundred Days<\/em><\/a> (Seren, 2011) was longlisted for the Man Booker Prize 2011, and won Wales Book of the Year 2012 and the 2012 Writers&#8217; Guild Award for Best Fiction Book. His latest book is a memoir, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.randomhouse.co.uk\/editions\/other-peoples-countries\/9780224098304\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>Other People\u2019s Countries: A Journey into Memory <\/em><\/a>(Cape, 2014).<\/p>\n<p>Patrick McGuinness is a fellow of St Anne&#8217;s College, University of Oxford, where he lectures in French. In 2009 he was made Chevalier dans l\u2019Ordre des Palmes acad\u00e9miques for services to French culture. In 2011 he was made Chevalier des Artes et des Lettres by the French government.
